Tata Harrier & Safari 2025 to Roar with New 2.0L Diesel Power

Tata Motors is set to boost the performance of its popular Harrier and Safari SUVs. The company now has full development rights for the 2.0L Diesel engine it earlier licensed from Stellantis. This move allows Tata to create more powerful and refined versions of these SUVs in the near future.

What’s Changing with the 2.0L Diesel Engine?

Previously, Tata used the 2.0L diesel engine in a standard setup, making around 170 hp. Any changes to its performance needed approval from Stellantis, which restricted Tata from tuning the engine for different models or variants.

Now, with full development rights in hand, Tata Motors can:

  • Tune the engine for different power outputs (e.g., a lower-power variant for entry-level trims, or a higher-output version for performance models).
  • Calibrate the engine in-house for better responsiveness, improved fuel efficiency, and reduced emissions.
  • Introduce updates faster in line with stricter emission standards like BS6.2 and beyond.

How Will It Affect the Harrier and Safari?

The Tata Harrier and Safari will benefit first from this change. With control over the engine tuning, Tata can now customize performance for different trims or driving needs, making the SUVs more versatile and attractive to a wider range of buyers.

Expect:

  • A new top-end variant with enhanced horsepower and torque for enthusiasts.
  • Improved refinement and fuel efficiency across all variants.
  • Faster rollouts of emission updates without external delays.

Production and Availability

Although Tata will now handle the engine’s development, it will still be built at the Ranjangaon plant, which is run jointly with Stellantis. The production site stays the same, but Tata now has complete freedom to tune and configure the engine as it sees fit for its vehicles.

What’s Next?

This step goes beyond just the Harrier and Safari. It also sets the stage for future Tata SUVs, like the upcoming Sierra, to use enhanced versions of this engine. It gives Tata a stronger edge over rivals like Mahindra and Hyundai, who already offer a wider range of engine choices in their SUV models.
